SHERMAN, Texas – Despite one bump in the road, Southeastern women's tennis picked up an 8-1 win over Austin College on Tuesday in its first team head-to-head contest of the season.
The Savage Storm jumped to an early 3-0 lead after picking up all three doubles points.
The duo of
Andreea Georgescu and Sabina Marderenko withstood a challenge at the top spot to snag an 8-6 win.
Fabiola Juarez and
Elba Haugen had the easiest matchup at No. 2 with an 8-1 win, while
Amanda Gomes and
Cassaundra Braaten picked up an 8-3 win at No. 3.
In single play, the top three positions were hotly contested.
Geargescu suffered the only Storm loss on the day though, falling 4-6, 3-6 to Lizzie Flint at No. 1.
Marderenko and Juarez each faced stiff competition in their matches before ultimately coming out on top.
Marderenko picked up a 6-3, 0-6, 10-8 win over Sophie McDonald at No. 2, while Juarez added a come-from-beghind 6-7, 6-3, 10-4 victory at No. 3 over Meghan Smith.
Haugen and Gomes posted matching 6-1, 6-0 wins at No. 4 and 5, respectively.
Braaten closed out the 8-1 win with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jacqui Nickell at No. 6.
The Storm will be back on the court Oct. 9 when they travel to Gainesville, Texas, to face North Central Texas College at 4 p.m.
